Question #25 explained
Which of the following is an option for treatment of sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae?
NOTE: Ceftriaxone or cefixime are commonly combined with azithromycin for treating this organism. N. gonorrhoeae can be susceptible to azithromycin and the addition of azithromycin to one of these drugs also adds coverage for C. trachomatis (a common co-infector). Addition of doxycycline in place of azithromycin is less preferred due to less convenient dosing and higher resistance to tetracyclines in N. gonorrhoeae. Resistance to N. gonorrhoeae is a worldwide concern, even being resistant to all conventional therapies at times, yikes!
A. Ceftriaxone – CORRECT
B. Cefixime – CORRECT
C. Metronidazole – INCORRECT: is not active against this organism
D. Amoxicillin – INCORRECT: it is uncommon for this organism to be sensitive to penicillins and thus this aminopenicillin is not an option
